lava lava andrewLava Lava Beach Club

A new addition to the Waikoloa Beach and Anaeho’omalu Bay area, Lava Lava Beach Club is a casual beach bar providing great food and drinks all day long, and Hawaiian musical entertainment on a nightly basis.  You can enjoy cocktails (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and appetizers while reclining in comfortable beach chairs, running your toes through the sand.  This is a very family-friendly atmosphere.  Dinner entrees are served nightly beginning at 5:00 pm in an open-air atmosphere.  This is also a prime spot to view the awesome Anaeho’omalu Bay sunset!

On our last visit to the Big Island, we had the privilege of meeting Andrew Watson, one of the managers of Lava Lava Beach Club.  Andrew is a 2002 graduate of Ponderosa High School in Parker, Colorado.  Great to meet you Andrew, and all of the good folks at Ponderosa say Aloha!

Fairmont Orchid Hotel-Mauna Lani Resort  (808) 887-7368

This place is one of our favorites!   This restaurant is definitely for that special evening out.

Brown’s Beach House is a fine dining open air restaurant located beach side at the Fairmont Orchid Hotel.  Be sure to make reservations ahead for right before sunset or have a cocktail at the terrace bar and dine under the stars.  Spectacular setting, spectacular service, and outstanding fresh seafood.    A little pricey, but worth every penny!

mai grill

Mai Grille at the Waikoloa Beach Resort Golf Club

Mai Grille at the Waikoloa Beach Resort Golf Club is a great little restaurant located directly across from the Pro Shop.

A typical bacon and eggs breakfast is hard to come by inside the resort.  Here you can get a great breakfast any day of the week, with great views of the golf course at a very reasonable price. What a great way to start your day!!  This is also a great spot for lunch, and again, very reasonably priced.  We love their hamburgers!  And after a round of golf this is a perfect spot to stop in and get a snack and libation.

The service is great, but there is usually just a small staff on duty so don’t feel awkward about seating yourself.

For the Grille’s hours give them a call at 808-866-7600 or better yet – stop in and check it out in person. You will be very glad that you did!

Tommys is a great place for a casual evening out.  Great atmosphere with both indoor and terrace seating . Either way you can see a great sunset from here.

There is nightly entertainment by local musicians each evening until 8 PM. They also have a great early evening menu as well as their regular menu. Great Hawaiian cuisine, atmosphere & music!

Without reservations there is usually a waiting list. No worries enjoy the atmosphere at the bar or do a little shopping downstairs at the Tommy store.

A definite must for dessert- Pina Colada Cake- Oh Ya!

sansei logoSansei Seafood & Sushi Bar

Located in the Queens MarketPlace is one of the area’s most popular venues. Definitely not a quiet & romantic venue. This place is  frequently noisy & busy & has more of a diner atmosphere.  The food is amazing!  Lots of great choices, including beef. Bold & unique flavors. Generous portions.  We usually split an appetizer & always order the Kona Coffee Mud Pie!  There is a Happy Hour of 50% off on Sunday & Monday until 6PM, Other days 25%. Make a reservation on Open Table & go early to get in line. Yes, there is always a line for Happy Hour.  Worth the wait.

blue dragon

Blue Dragon Restaurant

Located just north of Waikoloa Beach Resort in Kawaihae. Not for everyone. This place is very unique & very local. Open Thursday- Sunday with music nightly. Very small & open venue, so music can be loud. Best to look up & see what is scheduled before making a reservation. Yes, a reservation is needed. This is an outdoor venue, so it can be a little warm & flies can be a little issue just before sundown. After sundown is very pleasant.

The head chef is Noah Hester. Twice named to the top culinary chefs by Best Chefs of America. The Blue Dragon was also recently named one of the Top 100 Restaurants in America and Top 10 Restaurants in Hawaii for Outdoor Dining in 2014, by Open Table.

Island Gourmet

Located inside the Queens MarketPlace this is a little market that should have pretty much anything you might need. You can order food to eat there or take out. You can purchase pre made food, pastries, groceries & sundries. This market also sells fresh seafood & local grass fed beef. A great wine selection & a little wine bar.

We love to  have breakfast on the lanai with a fresh pineapple, some cereal or pastries & Kona coffee or grab a couple of steaks, some locally grown produce & grill out on the lanai.

GOT KIDS?   Try this.  Not bad actually.  Subway, Dairy Queen,Orange Julius and a number of other stand bys.  Try the Kailua Pig pizza at Paradise Pizza & Grill. This is a favorite and you can’t find this at Pizza Hut-LOL!  There is also a great ice cream shop next door.

There is usually some type of entertainment in the outdoor courtyard each evening. One night a week there is an outdoor theater for the kids- movies under the stars.

Enjoy a Starbucks under the stars while the kids are enjoying the movie!
