There are several dozen golf courses located throughout the island, many with special features and high rankings that make them popular among casual golfers and golf pros alike. Let’s take a look at three challenging and entertaining golf courses on the big island of Hawaii.

 

Hilo Municipal Golf Course

The Hilo Municipal Golf Course is the only golf course on the big island with a municipal layout. The course was designed by Willard Wilkinson in 1951.  This course is very popular with the Hilo locals because of its lush greenery and large location. The golf course is abundant with many beautiful local trees, such as the banyan tree, monkey pod, coconut palm trees, and shower trees. The course is spread over 146 acres of what used to be sugarcane fields and is perfect for people staying in a rental condo Hawaii or staying at a Hawaii golf condo on a vacation. The course contains 18 holes with a par of 71. Championship tees are 6325 yards with a slope of 121 and a rating of 70.4, forward tees are 5034 yards with a slope of 114 and a rating of 69.1, and the middle tees are 6006 yards with a slope of 118 and a rating of 68.8. The green fee costs are quite reasonable and the course has a driving range and rental carts are available.

Volcano Golf and Country Club

The Volcano Golf and Country Club course is the highest golf course in Hawaii, located at over 4,200 feet in altitude. The course is located just one mile from Mt. Kilauea and the Halemaumau Crater. The course is also the oldest golf course in Hawaii, founded in 1922 with only one hole! Although the course is in a more remote location, it is very much worth the drive and effort due to the uniqueness of the location and the challenge the course presents. A perfect choice for those staying at a Hawaii golf condo looking for an interesting challenge. The Volcano Golf and Country Club has 18 holes and a par of 72. The course has ratings of 70.8/128 for 6270 yards, 68.8/124 for 5965 yards, and 66/118 for 5499 yards.  Green fee costs are reasonable and Pele’s Restaurant serves breakfast and lunch 7 days/week.

Makalei Golf Club

The Makalei Golf Club course is a unique mountain course which is located on the lower slopes of Mt. Hualailai, which is only a ten minute drive from the Kona International Airport. This course is especially unique because of its mountainous layout, which features a 900 foot elevation change and incredible views of the Kona-Kohala Coast. The course is also known for being frequented by a variety of local bird, such as the peacock, and is a favorite among golfing sightseers. This course is one of the most challenging in Hawaii, but for those staying in a rental condo Hawaii or a Hawaii golf condo, it will be well worth the effort. The course has 18 holes and a par of 72. Its ratings are: (championship tees) 74.3/144 for 7091 yards, (blue tees) 72.4/140 for 6698 yards, (white tees) 68.7/134 for 6161 yards.  Average green fees and inexpensive club rental available.
